Healthy Child Healthy World Home Party!

Our Mission: We are igniting a movement that inspires parents to protect young children from harmful chemicals.

Healthy Child Healthy World is leading a movement that educates parents, supports protective policies, and engages communities to make responsible decisions, simple everyday choices, and well-informed lifestyle improvements to create healthy environments where children and families can flourish. When everyone turns a blind eye toward the amount and types of chemicals in our products, food, and anything else we and our children use on a daily basis Healthy Child Healthy World is using credible scientific evidence to spread the word on how these carcinogenic chemicals are affecting our us, and especially our children, who’s undeveloped bodies are even more vulnerable.

As you know, here at SAPsMaMa blog I try to help you live a more natural, non-toxic life and make green choices that will better your family’s health.  So when I was contacted by Healthy Child Healthy World last November I was very excited to host my very own Healthy Home Party!

What is a Healthy Home Party?  The Healthy Home Party is HCHC’s great idea on how to reach people with their message, and help you spread the message as well!  They provide the tools and information you need, as well as some wonderful samples and products from their great non-toxic and eco-friendly sponsors, and you host in your home an informative get-together to help educate your friends, family, school, daycare, and even your community on how to make more healthy, educated decisions to protect children’s health and development from common toxins!

My Healthy Home Party

I was so very excited to host a Healthy Home party, but first I had to decide when and where!  I currently have two locations I have a great amount of family and friends at, but ultimately I felt that my current residence would benefit most from a Healthy Home Party since I could invite the parents and children from SAP’s daycare to attend!  Then came the when question…and that was a toughy!  With Thanksgiving coming one weekend, College Graduation the next, and not too long after Christmas, everyone was sooo busy!  Ultimately I was able to set a date for two weeks before Christmas!

With advertising the Healthy Home party at SAP’s daycare as well as the Non-Traditional  Student Alliance at the college university, besides my own set of friends we had a nice small party of individuals!  From a couple without children looking to live healthier themselves to a single mother of a girl SAP’s age, it was great to see the diversity of those who wanted to learn from the event I was hosting!

Setting up for the party, I created a child’s play area with SAP’s bedroom and a table for art work, where SAPsDaDa (who works at SAP’s daycare) would watch the children during the Healthy Home Party.

The art table set up, with non-toxic soy crayons, and the  Mimi The Sardine toxin-free splatter mat!

I laid out the literature and samples nicely so they would be easy to view and discuss during the Healthy Home Party, yet leaving space for everyone to sit and be social.  I very much enjoyed the setting up, I even got to use my wooden bread bowl for the snack samples!  The Plum Organics Lunch Box did not last long after SAP got a-hold of it but it served it’s purpose and started some good conversation about organic snacks and how children benefit from consuming less pesticide treated foods!

The layout in the main area I was going to have the Healthy Home Party!  Samples and literature galore!

The “Activity” area I had set up for later in the Healthy Home Party!

I kept it very informal throughout the event and had open questions at any time, and there were quite some questions!  Luckily the materials that Healthy Child Healthy World provided with my Healthy Home Party Kit were great reference material and I was able to help anyone with any questions!  As I had written on my dry erase board (OK, SAP’s art easel!): Someone Can’t Do Everything, but Everyone Can Do Something!  And that is what we kept coming back to throughout the night.  Keeping it simple made it all the easier for everyone!

We started out watching the simple informational video sent in the Healthy Home Kit, which everyone thought was very easy to follow and easy for them to understand.  Many of the questions were to go more in depth with some of the things that were mentioned in the video, which was my next step!

We went through the 5 Simple Steps that Healthy Child Healthy World suggests as a very easy way to make a difference.  Healthy Child Healthy World  provided their print outs from their website, and I created some on-the-go Easy Step sheets showcasing such simple things as how to choose a healthy pacifier/teether or even a simple guide to safe plastic..perfect for your pocket or purse so you have it wherever you go!  Some questions I had received was “How will I remember all this?”, and these pocket guides was one way that helped them remember long after they left!

The 5 Easy Steps and the Pocket Guides I had printed out for everyone to take home with them!

Anyone may download the Pocket Guides themselves at Healthychild.org/pocketguides

As we went and discussed each step in the 5 Easy Steps I used the literature and samples sent in the Home Kit as examples… such as the Cliff bars as a healthy alternative to other snacks!  Of course discussing healthy snack alternatives with Step Number 1, how to avoid pesticides,  made us hungry so we all had some healthy snacks…there were even LUNA bar samples for the women who attended the party!

Samples from some great sponsors of Healthy Child Healthy Home!

Step Number 2 was on how to use Non-Toxic cleaning products…and so that lead to our fun activity for the night!  Creating your own toxin-free household cleaners!  Healthy Child Healthy Home had some wonderful and very simple recipes for creating your own non-toxic and safe home cleaning products for just about any cleaning job you might have.  The main ingredients of many of these products were simple household items and their uses were so numerous it was amazing!

Baking Soda, simple Castile Soap, Borax and Distilled White Vinegar are all you need to clean your home!

I had purchased some simple spray bottles from the local convenience store before the party, and as per popular consensus, we all decided to each create a multi-purpose cleaner!  Using just a couple teaspoons of Borax, some distilled white vinegar, and mostly water, we created a multi-pupose cleaner that I have been readily using in our household and it works great!  Add a splash of castile soap or plant-based dish soap and you get it super powered!  Everyone was quite amazed at just how little ingredients you really  need to make an effective cleaner and I found this was a wonderful way for everyone to see just how many pointless toxic ingredients you are paying for in your cleaners!

Making the cleaners at our table!  It was so easy!

It was at this point I decided to do door prizes!  Since there was enough prizes for everyone I let everyone choose what they would like to test out at home, and everyone got something great!  There was Yes To Carrots bubble bath and coupon, a sample kit of several Earth Friendly Products, some eco-friendly carpet cleaner, and even a Kleen Kanteen Sippy Cup!

Some of the door prizes I gave away of toxin-free, safe products of Healthy Child Healthy Home Sponsors!

There was soooo many coupons!  I had planned on putting together goody bags of some reusable bags for our guests but could not afford that many reusable bags myself, so I did the next best thing and re-used some generic bags SAP had gotten her presents in at Christmas time and her birthday the year before!  It turned out great!  We went through each coupon and I talked about each sponsor and how they were a more healthy choice for a family to make and their bags were full by the end of the night!

Here is my display of many of the coupons from sponsors of the Healthy Home Party!

I also have the Kleen Kanteen doorprize and a display of Clean Well hand sanitizer for discussion purposes!

Clean Well had a ton of samples of their sanitizing wipes but these were my own personal sanitizers…the only Triclosan-free non-alcoholic hand sanitizer!!

Some of our guests trying some yummy samples and filling their Take-Home bags with coupons and goodies!

After going through the samples and door prizes there was still more we could talk about…you know me, always ready to share info!  And Healthy Child Healthy Home provided a great amount of resources for this party!  We sat around reading and sharing pamphlets from some great companies like Naturepedic, discussed different fabrics when we sampled the Baby Soy sock samples, answered questions on how effective plant-based cleaners stand up to the other cleaners in the stores when we chatted about Seventh Generation samples of dish soap, and much much more!

Some of our pamphlets and other samples!  I loved the discussion on the chemicals in mattresses mos, so many have no idea!

I was really intrigued with the Dapple toy wipes, hope I can try those out sometime, but those went to one of our guests!

Winding down from our party I brought out my great array of books on healthy living, natural parenting, and non-toxic products!  Just flipping through the books guests’ minds were opened!  Of course I had my very own copy of the Healthy Child Healthy World book! I had many parents ask to borrow them in the future or where they could purchase some, or which books I would recommend, it was a great way to gain interest in how to go further with living a toxin-free healthy life for those looking to do so.

Healthy Child Healthy World, Smart Mama’s Green Guide, Slow Death By Rubber Duck, Raising Baby Green, Feeding Baby Green, Raising Healthy Children in a Toxic World, The Vaccine Book, and Happy Baby the Organic Guide to the First 24 Months…and my collection still has room to grow!  These are some great books to get you started if you are looking for a book to read for information!

The final activity I had planned for the night was to sit down and relax…in front of the computer!  Healthy Child Healthy World and WebMD have teamed up to bring you the Health eHome!!  This is a virtual program where you move throughout a house and all  the rooms (even the backyard!) and you get to easily click and learn easy ways to identify un-healthy dangers in your home and how to easily change to make your home more healthy…with just a few things in each room!  This is a wonderful interactive way to show people how easy it is to miss little things, and yet how simple it is to make a little change.

The Web MD and Healthy Child Healthy Home, Health eHome!!  I really like this program!  And everyone loved interacting on the computer, much easier at keeping attention for some than books and pamphlets!

It lasted only a couple hours, yet it felt like so much was covered!  Everyone had such a wonderful time, even the kids!  They colored and played band and kitchen and we even had a potty training session going while I was playing the DVD!  Was quite interesting for our household!  I was very glad I had healthy, toxin-free toys for the kids to play with and demonstrate to the parents the quality and educational value of natural toys compared to plastic, noisy toys on the store shelves these days, because the kids loved them!  SAP was worn out by the end of the  night, there were lots of “Bye byes” and hugs smiles when everyone left, and at SAP even put her Fairy doll “nite  nite” and crawled into bed herself 🙂

Even with all of the guests we had and goodie bags we filled up, there was so many coupons and samples left!  Since SAP’s daycare teacher had been unable to make it I made up a bag with enough samples and coupons for 4-5 people and brought it to the daycare to talk to them about it and share!  I also brought the left over coupons and pamphlets as well as some of my own Cliff snack bars with me while visiting family over the holidays, making little baggies and talking to family members with children or who were teachers and spreading the news!  To this day I still carry print outs of the Healthy Child Healthy Home Pocket Guides around with me to pass out to interested individuals.  Healthy Child Healthy World is a never-ending resource, and this experience in sharing with so many ways to improve children’s and family’s lives in communities was a great gift, this Healthy Home Party program is by far a superior way of passing on this ever important information!  Thank you Healthy Child Healthy World!

And now, SAP would like to show you her “Nite nite” routine with her Planet Pixie doll “baby” 🙂  So cute I had to share.

Hug “baby nite nite”….

“baby go bed”….

“nite dragon” and tucks “baby” in…

…finally, closes door and says “bye bye, bye bye” ! 🙂 Love my baby girl!.
