Earthly Remedies By Erin Review and Giveaway!

I have strived for many years to make the products I use and my home in general more natural and toxin-free!  As many of you who have the same resolution have come to realize, that is not always the easiest task!  Not only locating products or companies (often times not in town, but instead on the internet), but more so the “Green Washing” that is taking place across the country that can easily mis-lead even an experienced individual into buying a product that is not as non-toxic or natural as they were first lead to believe!

So in my journey I have made the decision to become a loyal customer to companies, brands, and products that have proven themselves to me to be free of the harsh chemicals I avoid and are completely natural and/or organic, and this has come to serve my family very well!

One such company I have recently found to have proven themselves to me is Earthly Remedies by Erin.  They are relatively  new, but just speaking with Erin, reading the discussions she has on her Facebook Fan page, and researching the info she includes in her store website, she has proven to me that her products and company meet and surpass the necessary qualifications that I make for the products I purchase…and believe me, that is very hard to do!  I am one VERY picky person when it comes to my daughter and my family!  Kudos Erin!

Erin sent me for review three samples to try to help me out with some of SAP’s sensitive skin issues!  The Baby Butt Balm, Baby Butt Cream, and the Healing Salve!

SAPsMaMa Thinks: Baby’s Butt Balm

When I first got the samples from Earthly Remedies in the mail I had to do a little bit of research to see what would be best to use where and when!  Each balm, salve, or cream Erin makes is geared toward certain ailments so I wanted to see how it would best work for what.  I ended up testing everything everywhere though!

The baby’s butt balm is made with cold pressed organic canola oil and/or organic sunflower oil, beeswax, unrefined shea butter, and a proprietary blend of organic essential oils. These are all natural ingredients that are safe to use with your children, and even safe to use with cloth diapers!  Without the use of harmful chemicals this Baby’s Butt Balm is formulated to help prevent diaper rash on your little one’s bum.

The Baby’s Butt Balm comes in a little tube that looks like a chap stick tube.  I found this very interesting, as I’m used to having to put balm or cream on my fingers to spread it on SAP’s bum….with this balm I did not have to do that!  I could easily apply it even in the smallest crevices (right where she ends up getting a rash first of course!) and it went on evenly and smoothly, no mess.

Since it was the easiest to use out of all three samples that I received and it was formulated to best prevent diaper rash I decided that this was the ointment that I would send to daycare and use in replacement of my lanolin.  Lately SAP has been prone to redness and the lanolin was the only thing working at keeping her from turning pink on the bum every day!  I was hoping I could keep that from happening with the use of this baby butt balm instead.

I was right!  Well, when I first gave the daycare teacher the ointment I got quite the odd look…they had never seen anything like it before!  But they said they’d use it with every diaper change.  So with apprehension I left it in their care for a week and did not ask for updates.  Day after day SAP came home with a nice clear bum, no pink or redness at all!  I was a happy mama!  But what did the daycare think?  I asked the teacher at the end of the week and she told me they like it!  When asking someone to hand them the ointment they would say “the chapstick thing” and they could easily find it.  They were happy it worked well to prevent redness and they could easily apply it.  The only thing they mentioned against it was it was difficult to see where it was applied, since it did not shimmer as much or look white at all as some ointments and creams do.

SAPsDaDa thought the idea of the chapstick tube was great and it worked very well for travel when we went on a weekend trip out of town.  The only thing he had an issue with was remembering it was “butt ointment” and not chapstick!  lol

I will definitely be purchasing more of this baby butt balm, I have been dissatisfied with other ointments lately and wanting to go to something more natural…this will help me do that!

SAPsMaMa Thinks: Baby Butt Cream

The Baby Butt Cream is made with Meadow foam seed oil, organic sunflower oil and/or organic canola oil, unrefined shea butter, organic cocoa butter, Illipe Butter, Beeswax, organic calendula, organic st. John’s Wort, organic arnica, organic comfrey, and a proprietary blend of organic essential oils.

The sample of Baby Butt Cream I received was in a small tin, perfect for travel (though the actual product is bigger).  We used the cream on SAP’s bum when she did turn pink or red, often times in the morning after sitting in her night diaper all night.  SAPsDaDa and I love this cream!  You only have to use a tiny bit for it to spread across and rub into her skin on her bum, and it spread sooo easily!  Very silky! We used to use California Baby Calendula cream for SAP in the mornings to help with her redness as the calendula works well for her, but it is so expensive and we go through it so fast!  This tiny little sample tin lasted us a long time! I much more prefer this too since it is organic….I feel my money is going toward something worth it!

The Baby butt Cream is safe for cloth diapers, and probably safer than many other cloth diaper safe ointments you have heard of, it’s much more breathable and the oils used are based in  meadow foam seed oil, which breaks down easier and won’t stay in your diapers causing repelling issues and leaks.

Traveling with the Baby Butt Cream and Healing Salve!  You can see the sample tins up by the wipes container.

This was when we went to SAPsNaNa’s house for the weekend, our makeshift changing area with out essentials!!

The only issue I had with my baby butt cream was when I was traveling.  I found it very convenient to put the little tin in my pocket instead of in the diaper bag…which worked out great!  Of course, even though it’s winter, my pocket is quite warm…and it melted!  I still used it fine, but it became a bit messy lol.   The jar that you would be purchasing if you buy this product is a lot bigger than the sample I received so this is not an issue for most people, and Erin assures me no special treatment needs to be taken with the temperature this cream is stored at on the changing table between uses.

Yet another Earthly Remedies products I will be buying again!

SAPsMaMa Thinks: Healing Salve

The Healing Salve is made with organic canola and/or sunflower oil, beeswax, unrefined shea butter, organic cocoa butter, and a proprietary blend of organic essential oils including helichrysum oil.

When I first got the Healing Salve I was unsure what I would use it for.  However, I think I was naive and didn’t remember I had a toddler on my hands!  This healing salve has proven to be very useful for many things!

I first started using the Healing Salve on SAP’s bum.  Though fitted diapers prevent leaks best for her at night time, sometimes they can cause some ammonia burns on her bum.  I feel so bad when this  happens and we try calendula cream, but it does not seem to work all too well for her with this irritation.  When I tried the healing salve…she didn’t complain at all!  It felt good to her, and her skin healed quickly!  I also enjoyed that it had a very pleasant and interesting scent to it, even smelling like cloves sometimes!  I did not mind having this scent on my hands after changing a diaper, rather than the unpleasentness of most diaper ointments or event the lanolin smell I’ve been getting a little tired of smelling, so I really like this.

Besides this, it came in very useful this cold and dry winter.  SAP, with her sensitive skin, often gets dried and cracked skin in some areas like her arms and around her mouth when she’s exposed to the cold a lot.  We put this Healing Salve on her dry spots at night when she went to bed and in the morning and over time her skin healed and did not get worse.  Last winter SAP’s skin, even with multiple daily applications of lotion, ended up cracking and even bleeding in a couple spots and I resolved not to let that happen this winter…I think we’ve done that!

I have even found myself using this sometimes.  Erin recommends this healing salve for sore nipples when nursing, cuts, scrapes, and even for your little baby boy after his circumcision!  This is something to keep in the diaper bag for any occasion really!

  8. The fact that this butt balm is in a “chapstick” tube is great! I could tell from your review that this feature was an added bonus, and I believe my daycare workers would also rather use diaper balm in a stick than to get greasy fingers with every diaper change. We’re into potty-learning now, but I still think this cream could be useful to prevent rashes on my busy little toddler’s bum 🙂
